Today was a good day. Finally did pretty well on an exam after a overly-long drought. Also went to an Alzheimer’s house today. I love old people. Also, thanks for taking the time to actually write this. I read it here and there to keep myself in check. Thanks again. You know who you are.
“Hey Eric,
I read your tumblr post (I read all of them!) and I can tell that you’re overwhelmed and probably a little frustrated. But I just wanted to tell you something- saying that you’re “just like every other college kid” is underselling yourself to yourself. I know that’s a little confusing but let me explain it. I used to say that and write that and believe that all the time- that I was busy, but not any more busy than the next guy and probably other people are busier. Sure, there might be -some- people that are busier, working harder, or perhaps are more overwhelmed than you are, but that doesn’t make any of your efforts and the work that you’re putting into what you do matter any less.
The stuff that you do and the focus you have on your future matters too much for you to discredit yourself like that. Even if it makes you feel a little uncomfortable, instead of focusing on what you perceive to be your shortcomings, focus on your accomplishments and how that sets you apart. Not just -any- college student transplants himself hundreds (or thousands) of miles from his hometown to pursue his goals, and not every student finds success in the way that you have. You’re not ‘just like any other student.’
I apologize if this seems overwrought, but this is a lesson I learned waaaaaaay too late in my college career so I thought I’d pass it on. Good luck with what you do and I wish you all the success in the future.”
You have no idea how much that means to me and I hope you’re doing well yourself.
I don’t really give a fuck, and my excuse is that I’m young.
